The 5-Day Fasting-Mimicking Meal Program

I must confess, after 8+ months housebound, my eating habits have been a little sloppy. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve given myself full permission for all those extra carbs in 2020, and I hope you have too! But with the holidays upon us, I was craving a little restart. No fad or quickie “diets”, but rather a return to how I normally eat when the world isn’t turned upside down. More fruits and veggies and a little less “Spaghetti Nights” and “Sunday Sundaes” if you know what I mean. :)

What appealed to me about Prolon was that you actually get to eat during the fast. I’m chasing a 4 year old around all day and I need all the energy I can get. While there were times I definitely felt hungry on the fast, I never felt like I couldn’t keep up with my kid.

Plus I got The Hubs to join me, which made it way more fun! I HIGHLY recommend doing this with a partner, family member or a buddy if you can.

Prolon’s 5-day meal program gently guides your body into a fasting state. You get 3 meals a day, plus snacks, and some vitamin supplements. It allows one cup of black coffew (minus my more-than-generous splash of half-and-half) and all the herbal tea and water you can drink.

The packaging is absolutely gorgeous and all your food comes in the box with a menu and easy instructions to follow. Honestly, just the fact that I didn’t have to “meal plan” for 5 days got me pretty jazzed to start.

The real surprise was just how tasty all the food was. We looked forward to all our bars, soups and snacks during the entire fast. No sawdust/cardboard textures and tastes thank goodness!

In a nutshell, this was our experience…

Day 1: The first day was easy-peasy for both of us. Getting started is fun and the food was unexpectedly yummy. We were very optimistic.

Day 2: We were both starting to miss real food a bit. And I’m noticing all my bad habits and how often I get the urge to reach for unnecessary snacks.

Day 3: I agree with others, this is the hardest day. You get the least amount of food and we we’re both the hungriest on this day. Michael described it as being “more bored than hungry” and he was missing his nightly routines such as an evening cocktail or some late-night ice cream.

Day 4: Wow! We both woke up feeling great with lots of energy. Dare I say a bit euphoric even? Almost enough to make us forget that we were still hungry. But feeling some really positive results keeps us motivated to finish.

Day 5: We’re just so happy to reach the end, we were dancing in the kitchen. Still hungry, but this day flew by and we started thinking about what meal we would have to break the fast and celebrate.

And while a brand new box of Prolon is pretty darn exciting, there is nothing that beats the sight of an EMPTY box which means you’ve CROSSED THE FINISH LINE!!!

avocado toast

Day 6 we broke our fast with some Avocado Toast. Our first non-box food for the week…and it was scrumptious!

In the end, I lost 5 pounds, and Michael lost 8. And well over a week later, the weight has remained off for both of us. More importantly, it reset my attitude, rid some bad snacking habits, and I’m genuinely craving and creating healthier food choices again. My energy is up and I’m feeling more focus and clarity. I’m giving Prolon two thumbs up!

I think this would make a lovely and thoughtful holiday gift. It’s pricey (one kit costs $249) but it’s an investment in your health. Of course, speak to you doctor before trying anything new and you can find out more here at Prolon. They also have a great Instagram page here.

Will I do Prolon again? Yes. And Michael says he will join me again when I do. Perhaps after the holidays? I can see this being a nice way to start out 2021- a year I have so much hope in!
